2022 WEAO Technical Symposium and OPCEA Exhibition

During June 19 through June 21, 2022, the Azura Associates team attended the 2022 WEAO Technical Symposium and OPCEA Exhibition hosted by the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO). The event was held at RBC Place in London, Ontario and was a must attend event for all wastewater professionals.

Azura’s Michael Nelson, PhD shared the team’s expertise by presenting two papers at this event. The first presentation took place on Monday June 20 where Michael presented, “Digester Monitoring and Feedstock Characterization: Best Practices for What to Test and What to Trust.” This paper was authored by the Azura experts: Michael Nelson, PhD, Dave Ellis, MASc, PEng, and James Arambarri, MASc. During this presentation, Michael explored the most important parameters for digester monitoring, examples of how to judge the validity of data, ways to verify it, and how to spot bad data. This paper shares many of the lessons learned during Azura’s years of experience working with and optimizing anaerobic digester systems.

In the evening, the Azura team attended the Water for People Canada Social Night. This event took place at the Toboggan Brewery and was a great opportunity to chat with fellow water professionals. We would like to thank James Arambarri, who has been volunteering with Water for People Canada and who helped to organize this event. The Azura team was pleased to be sponsors of this fun social evening. If you are interested in supporting or learning more about WFP-Canada, please visit their website.

On Tuesday June 21, Michael presented a second paper, “Decentralized Wastewater Treatment in an Urban Setting: A Pilot Study of the Circulating Fluidized Bed Bioreactor Treating Septic Tank Effluent.” This paper was authored by Michael Nelson, PhD and Prof. George Nakhla of The University of Western Ontario. Michael discussed the results from part of his PhD work which showed that circulating fluidized bed bioreactor (CFBBR) technology is a promising option for treating residential wastewater and onsite remediation of contaminated water bodies.

We would like to thank WEAO for organizing such a great event, and are looking forward to next year!
